The Immunization Partnership’s first art exhibit takes a different look at vaccine awareness through the community’s lens.
Opening Reception will kick-off month-long exhibit, conclude with the People’s Choice Award.

HOUSTON, TX (April 29, 2022) – Imagine art that creates a dialogue about immunizations, how vaccines are important to a person’s overall health, and how community awareness can change the overall health of the people who live there. On May 6, attendees of “The Art of Awareness: A Community’s Self-Portrait of Immunization Health” will have the opportunity to peruse the works of local artists, curated just for this event.
“It’s amazing to see the various perceptions of the power of vaccines,” says Terri Burke, executive director of The Immunization Partnership. “Artists have become advocates for their community’s health using creativity.”
In collaboration with MECA Dow Campus located in historic 6th Ward, the goal of the exhibit is to enrich the community through engagement and art. The artwork will be on display from May 6 through May 26 and is an opportunity to share the effects of immunizations within a community, while also understanding how the community feels about immunizations.
“It’s exciting to see local artists showcase how vaccines protect their communities and raise awareness about vaccines through their artwork,” says Ashley Beale, program coordinator at The Immunization Partnership.
Reception attendees and MECA visitors will be able to vote for their favorite artwork through May 26. Winners of the People’s Choice Award for Most Impactful Piece will be announced at the Closing Ceremony on May 26. Monetary prizes of $250–$500 will be awarded for first, second, and third place.
Houston’s poet laureate, Outspoken Bean, will perform at the art exhibit. Outspoken Bean is part of “Come Together Houston: A Community Arts and Health Partnership,” a performance series organized by Houston Methodist Hospital, in collaboration with the University of Houston Kathrine McGovern College of the Arts. “Come Together Houston” is funded by the CDC Foundation, to inform audiences about the COVID-19 vaccine and what it can do for our community. Showcasing the arts and the impact it can have on our world, it features other Houston artists: GONZO247, Mariachi Pumas, and Urban Souls.
